Research Professor and Head of the Data Science and AI Centre (Centro de Ciencia de Datos e Inteligencia Artificial, CCD) since 2025; Director of Research and Faculty of the School from 2020 to 2025. Founded the CCD in 2023; it carries ML work from pilot to production, including its governance, explainability and monitoring. Projects have covered case management and domestic violence risk for the Zacatecas prosecutor’s office, pharmaceutical logistics, port and terminal operations, school siting in El Salvador, and nationwide 5G planning.

Independent consulting — 2025 to present

Fractional CTO work for AI startups, machine learning advisory for early-stage ventures, and legal operations automation with language models and agentic workflows.

DSaPP, University of Chicago, and DSSG at Carnegie Mellon and the Alan Turing Institute — 2016 to 2022

Lead and senior machine learning researcher, and engineering manager. Led or contributed to twenty data science projects across six countries: emergency medical services placement, school dropout prevention, diabetes screening, HIV care retention, homelessness prevention, housing safety, inspection prioritization, police early warning, suicide lifeline routing, pollution enforcement, urban mobility and transport equity. Co-developed Triage, a framework for developing and operating ML models that government and nonprofit programs have since adopted, and contributed to Aequitas, a fairness auditing toolkit.

ITAM — 2013 to 2020

Researcher and Director of the MSc in Data Science, the first graduate program in data science in Mexico; on leave from 2017 to 2019 while at the University of Chicago. Founding director of the Centro de Ciencia de Datos, 2019 to 2020.

Open Intelligence, Datank and Sm4rt Predictive — 2011 to 2017

Co-founder and CTO of Open Intelligence, co-founder and chief of machine intelligence at Datank, and lead data scientist at Sm4rt Predictive Systems. Built production data products adopted by agencies and consultancies, and at Sm4rt stood up a bank’s first fraud data warehouse, which cut detection time from weeks to under one week and reduced the rule set by roughly ninety percent.
